Born in Shanghai and moving to Australia at the age of five Barry is a keen observer of cultures. Speaking a total of five languages and dialects and counting Barry has since then become an interpreter of cultures through music by means of the cello. His experience in classical music ranges from the baroque to the modern repertoire. The width of his musical spectrum and dedication is reflected through his love for playing on period and modern instruments.
Through studying with Qing-Yu Qin at the Melbourne Conservatory of Music, Adriana Contino at the Freiburg Music Conservatory, Karine Georgian at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester and Raphael Wallfisch at the Zürich University of the Arts in Zürich, along-side Masterclasses in solo and chamber music coaching with world leading pedagogues including Janos Starker, Ralph Kirshbaum, Martin Ostertag, Liwei and Lawrence Power, Barry has picked up a niche for teaching.
Barry combines his accumulated knowledge of cello playing ranging from the Chinese and Russian schools to the English and American methods with his Australian roots in producing a healthy and effective pedagogical method of cello teaching.
